Ras Aaron Blackman whose singing name is “De Liberator” was elected to head the Local Calypso Writers and Singers Association, when the body held its Annual General Meeting in the Mash Secretariat on January 5 last.
At the same meeting Lassel Duke (Mighty Duke) was elected Vice President while Col. (Rtd) Ross is the new Secretary.
The Treasurer is Daria Barrow while the committee members are Deryck Mangal, Charmaine Blackman, Winfield James and Kenroy Fraser.
The meeting and election of new office bearers come at a time when the association is feverishly working to fine tune the biggest event on the calypso calendar in Guyana, the Mashramani Calypso Competition.
Already 20 Calypsonians are shortlisted for the competition’s semi final which is slated for the Bartica community centre on February 8.
The contestants will attempt to dethrone reigning monarch “De Professor” who hails from the Mining Town of Linden.
Among those shortlisted to compete are former monarchs Young Bill Rogers, Ras Marcus, Mighty Canary and Winfield James along with newcomers Darcia Barrow and seasoned campaigners Queen Makeba, Mighty Voter, Precious Pearl, De Liberator, Mighty Duke, Bright Colours, King Pirai, Mighty Believer, De Eagle and Blue Flame.
The grand final will be held on February 14.
