A security guard attached to the Strategic Security Service was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Thursday night for a gunshot wound he sustained when he and his colleague reportedly came under attack while in Sophia.
The injured man has been identified as 45-year-old Mortimer Maynard.
He was shot to his left thigh and was discharged from the hospital late yesterday. His colleague is Trevor Fraser, 42. Both men are now in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police in a press release said that about 21:00 hours on Thursday, Maynard and Fraser were in North Sophia armed with a .38 revolver belonging to the security company when they were attacked by three men who took away the firearm from Fraser and discharged three rounds, one of which struck Maynard.
However, Kaieteur News was told that the two guards attempted to rob three men in Sophia when they were “over-powered” by the men who then took away the company’s weapon.
Yesterday, Kaieteur News attempted at talk with Maynard while he was still a patient at the hospital but a female who was with him stopped him from speaking with anyone.
She also verbally abused the reporter and asked that no one try to contact the injured man. Investigations are ongoing.
