A 24-year-old-man who is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown is now set to face a Judge and Jury.
On Wednesday, Orwayne Welcome of 38 Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown was committed to stand trial at the High Court at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes by Magistrate Judy Latchman after she found that a sufficient case was made out against him.
Welcome was indicted on a Rape of a Child Under 16 charge. The offence was alleged to have been committed on March 22, last year in Georgetown.
Prosecuting the case was Sergeant Vishnu Hunt who told the court that on that day, the victim left home with her sister en route to school. He said, however, she joined a Route 47 bus and was “bus riding” with the accused who later took her to a house and had sexual intercourse with her.
The matter was subsequently reported and after investigations, the accused was arrested and charged for the offence.
During the course of the trial, Welcome was granted bail to the tune of $250,000 but after posting it he failed to attend the subsequent court hearing without reasonable excuse. An arrest warrant was issued and the bail was escheated. He has been held in custody ever since.
