Anti-Doping education on the cards for athletes, coaches, administrators
President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Cheryl Thompson has disclosed that the federation will be aiming to revive the once vibrant Inter-Club competition as a means of further development for cyclists.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Thompson, who has been at the helm of the sport for just over three years, noted that the GCF would like to take the sport a notch up in terms of competitiveness and embrace the view that the revival of the Inter-Club contests would contribute towards this aim. It is being hoped that races can be held each quarter.
Cycling has been gradually holding its own and is one of the most vibrant sports which have been attracting an encouraging level of sponsorship for events on the local landscape. A number of riders were selected for overseas competition last year including the Caribbean Championships and the inaugural South American Youth Games among others.
Thompson says she is aiming to maintain that level of vibrancy on the regional and international stages. To this end, junior and senior riders will be selected for the Caribbean Championships (date and venue to be decided) and the XX Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3, 2014.
The National Road Race Championships would be held towards the end of June and is expected to be very competitive.
The new season has already pedaled off with a road race in the Ancient County of Berbice with the Benjamin Sports Open Cycle Raod Race and will commence in the city on Saturday January 25 with the 21st Ricks and Sari National Park 11-race Meet organised by National Coach, Hassan Mohamed.
Another area that will be high priority for the GCF this year would be education and awareness of banned substances. This is a topical issue at the moment and Thompson said that no stones will be left unturned in the federation’s quest to ensure that cyclists are fully aware of what they can and cannot use.
One of Guyana’s Doping Control Officers, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Thompson informed would be conducting a number of training sessions with cyclists, coaches and administrators to bring them up to date with the ever improving measures of the World Anti Doping Agency to combat the scourge of drugs use in sports.
“It is very important for us at the GCF to become more proactive in this area, it is something that is very topical and we’ve seen many athletes getting caught so we are going to educate our athletes, coaches and administrators to ensure that they are fully aware and understand the implications of using drugs.”
Thompson also disclosed that a new club will soon be joining the ranks of the federation from Corentyne, Berbice which would increase the number from the Ancient County to three. Flying Ace Cycle Club and Trojan Cycle Club are the established clubs in Berbice.
In the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden the flag is carried by the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club; East Bank has United Bike Shop, while in the City there are Roraima Bikers Club, Continental Cycle Club, Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club, Flying Stars Cycle Club, Kaieteur Cycle Club and Team Coco’s.
