The saga surrounding the tragic death of two-year-old Kimanie Watson took its most interesting twist yesterday when her 15-year-old uncle appeared before Magistrate Zamela Ali at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, charged with murder.
The young accused, who was escorted into the courtroom in handcuffs by detectives, appeared bewildered, and his disposition betrayed his obvious fear of the surroundings he was in.
With his mother and stepfather in the courtroom, the teen, who was unrepresented by counsel, had the charge read to him by the Magistrate.
The charge comes almost three months after investigations commenced.
It is alleged that on October 21 last, the accused teen murdered Kimanie Watson at her home at Lot 46 South Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
The two-year-old child died under suspicious circumstances, a few hours after she was seen playing in her yard with her cousins. A post mortem examination had confirmed that the child had been sodomised.
Speaking with this newspaper after yesterday’s court hearing, the teenager’s mother Dianne Graham said that her son urged her not to cry because he “is strong.”
Magistrate Ali set January 27 for the accused to return to court when the Preliminary Inquiry into the murder is expected to commence.
The entire incident had divided the family, with the mother of the dead child accusing her mother of covering up for her teenaged brother. The dead child’s mother even attacked her mother and they were both charged with assaulting each other.
