West Indies star batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul said that he is available to represent the West Indies in all formats of the game. He was speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club during the Guyana team practice session.
Chanderpaul has so far accumulated 11,219 runs in 153 tests at an average of 51.93 and became the second highest West Indian run scorer in the longest version of the game behind Brian Lara. The feat was achieved during the recent test series against New Zeeland. He stated that he is happy to achieve the milestone. “I never thought that I could have done this and I am excited about it. It has been a long road, I take one game at a time, and this is the result of the hard work that I have put in over the years”, he added.
Chanderpaul, who hails from Unity on the East Coast of Demerara, stated that he wants to achieve similar heights in One Day Internationals. “I am available to represent the region in all formats of the game and would also like to achieve similar feat in the 50 over version,” he said. Chanderpaul has 8,778 runs from 268 One day games at an average of 41.60; he is just 1,222 runs short of his target in ODIs.
Chanderpaul informed that he is looking forward to the Regional Super 50 and 4- day tournaments as well as fulfilling his contract with Derbyshire. When quizzed about Guyana chances in the Regional Super 50, Chanderpaul expressed confidence that they can go all the way. “We have a good team, the batting, bowling and fielding look fine, but we have to play hard in all departments, keep it simple, put our trust in God and hopefully we will come out on top,” he explained.
The lefthander, who was the helm when Guyana last tasted success at this level in 2005, said that it is a good choice by the Guyana Cricket Board to have the Guyana Defence Force trainers assist with their preparation adding that it will help to improve team spirit and discipline. Chanderpaul however stressed the need for the younger players to occupy the crease for longer periods. “We had a practice match and some of the players threw their wickets away with poor shot selections. They need to rotate the strike without taking much risk,” said Chanderpaul.
The Regional Super 50 tournament starts on January 30 in Trinidad and Tobago.
