Leader of the political opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) David Granger has expressed displeasure with the attitude of the Government regarding the Cabinet approved 56M for the restoration of Georgetown, citing the amount as being inadequate.
Granger said that the government’s attitude to the city of Georgetown is similar to Region Eight and other municipal bodies that do not have a PPP (Peoples Progressive Party) majority. They are essentially starved of funds by the government who then arbitrarily intervene and conduct works without informing the Municipalities.
“So it is quite clear that the PPP administration is bent on embarrassing the Municipality. It has the resources to provide a more orderly flow of finance and support for the City Council and we could all be happy for that. But this is the attitude of the PPPC administration, their intention is really to have a big Public Relations event splash to show how good they are and try to show that the elected officials are not doing their work,” said Granger.
The Opposition Leader noted that everybody is aware that the government has been trying to strangle the elected officials, citing the recent confirmation of the Town Clerk position as an example.
APNU Shadow Minister of Labour, Basil Williams expressed that the PPPC will stop at nothing to take control over Georgetown.
“It’s deplorable when you look at rubbish mixed with the flooded yards and trenches, it’s a health hazard. One of their Ministers is on record saying that he doesn’t mind if we have an epidemic and it shows their attitude.”
Williams said he thinks it’s a “pipe dream” for the government to be able to control of Georgetown.
“They believe that once you are not PPP, they starve you of funds. They create situations where the garbage piles up the drains are clogged up. When there is a flood then they talk about they will have to take action. Who benefits when they take such actions? It’s the PPP cronies, they get the contracts and they get the money to clean up the city. The people who won the city should really be the people who are dispensing that type of revenue to do the work of the city… It’s all a question of patronage to them,” said Williams.
