Heavy winds, intense rainfall and manmade obstruction are responsible for the constant blackouts plaguing Demerara, says Kempton France, Operations Engineer of the Guyana Power and Light Company.
France said that heavy winds and rainfall have damaged a lot of infrastructure. Sometimes about 10 areas are affected at once and priority is given to the area with the most impact, he said.
In addition, careless driving by some motorists has also resulted in damaging utility poles. He said that almost four to five hours a motorist drives into a pole destroying the infrastructure.
France asserted that the additional consumption of electricity by consumers for the Christmas season is not responsible for the power outages in Demerara.
However, the constant blackouts have been frustrating to consumers. They find the blackouts disruptive and are wondering if the entire season, especially Christmas Day, would have power outage.
Recently, residents of the first half of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara were without electricity for about 18 hours.
According to a resident of Avenue ‘A’, after constant blackouts during the day the area was finally without power during the afternoon. It did not regain power until late yesterday afternoon. By that time some meats stored in the refrigerator were spoilt.
France acknowledged the power outage and said that it was caused by a burnt pole. The incident resulted in the destruction of four transformers leaving the front section of the scheme without power.
He noted that late Thursday evening the damage was discovered but because the pole was located in a swampy area the crew was unable to access the area. As a result, the area was isolated. Yesterday the crew fixed the damage.
