After weeks of intense rivalry among the thirty-two teams that started the competition, this year’s Georgetown segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Tournament is set to culminate tomorrow evening, at the National Park.
The two teams that will be battling for the top prize of $500,000 are Queen street of Tiger Bay and Stevedore Housing Scheme and while both of them have made it this far without the fuss and fanfare usually reserved for favourites, they’ve constantly displayed admirable efficiency in this format of the sport so a close and interesting
contest is envisaged.
Queen Street will no doubt be led by the skilful and prolific Deon Alfred, who has mesmerised many opposing defenders with his sublime skills and he is expected to be supported by strike partner Dion Fredericks.
In their previous encounter, they easily disposed of neighbours Hope Street with Alfred and Fredericks the chief architects of their win.
On the other hand, Stevedore Housing Scheme though not stacked with players possessing the skills of some of the other teams, are being led by the savvy and experienced Elroy Parks and he has been the stabilising force at the back, while Quason Winter will be asked to add further support.
In their last game, they showed the calmness of a veteran team en route to eliminating heavy favourites Albouystown ‘B’ in a penalty shootout. The loser will take home $300,000 and a trophy.
In the playoff for third place, Albouystown ‘B’ takes on Hope Street and this too promises to be a crowd pleasing encounter. Marlon Nedd will once again be charged with the responsibility to lead Albouystwon ‘B’ to the $200,000 prize and support is expected from Roy Cassou. The loser will receive $100,000 and a trophy.
Along with the above mentioned prizes, teams were eligible to pocket an additional $25,000, $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 each, according to their final placing. Meanwhile, a couple of exhibition matches are planned to be part of the night’s proceedings.
