The collaboration between law enforcement officials from Guyana and Brazil have borne fruit with the apprehension of four Brazilians and the recovery of two stolen Honda CG125 motorcycles at the border location of Lethem yesterday morning.
The men were held in a house at Tabatinga, Lethem where they had stashed the motorcycles they had allegedly stolen in Brazil.
Kaieteur News understands that local law enforcement officers were informed by their counterparts from the federal police in Brazil that two Brazilians had stolen the motorcycles and were heading to Guyana.
Armed with this information, the local police were on the lookout for the suspects.
Late Tuesday night they received word that the men were spotted at a house in Tabatinga. They waited until early morning and then paid them a surprise visit.
Sure enough the men and the stolen motorcycles were there.
The men along with the stolen bikes were subsequently handed over to Brazilian police.
But while a police source said that the men were apprehended without a fuss, a source in the Tabatinga area told Kaieteur News that there were reports of gunshots being fired.
Over the past decade, thieves have used the Lethem crossing to illegally bring into Guyana motorcycles stolen from Brazil. The main choice is the Honda CG 125 motorcycles.
Most of these bikes end up in the city and have become popular with criminals who use them in the commission of armed robberies.
Very often the police detain several Honda CG 125 motorcycles for which the owners have no proper documentation.
