In an effort to fill the void created by no female tournament being played recently, the Little DIVA Flames Football Club will be embarking on an ambitious venture by organizing and running off a tournament for females, 24 years and under (U24), during the Mashramani period next year.
Teams which will be invited to participate are Linden, West Demerara, Berbice, East Coast (Buxton), East Bank (Grove), Eagles (Georgetown) & Little DIVA Flames (Georgetown).
According to Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith – President of the club, female football has been struggling to survive in Guyana and to date the Lady Jags are the only representative team to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
A release from the club stated, “For us to have meaningful local representatives on national teams there is a need for the females to play regular and competitive football.”
It was his idea to form this club so that prospective female players can have somewhere to train and enhance their skill and have a chance to fulfill their desire to represent Guyana in the future.
Accordingly, Griffith is urging all stakeholders, companies and well wishers who are wants to partner with the club, to come forward and support the venture. A budget is being prepared in the interim and will be available by weekend.
Meanwhile, the Little DIVA’s will recommence training today at the GFC Ground commencing at 16:00 hrs.
Also, the club has been invited to participate in a tournament in Lethem during the Easter Weekend Rodeo event.
Plans are also in place to hold a fund raising take away lunch January month end.
