The first ever amateur boxing card organised by the Roberts Champions Boxing Gym (RCBG) of New Amsterdam Berbice came off with a bang when the activity was held on Saturday last at the Matthew Allen (Stelling road) in New Amsterdam.
The night’s activity which featured the three fighters who competed in recently
held Inaugural Junior South American Games in Peru; Flyweight Michael April, junior middleweight Travis Fraser and bantamweight Joel Williamson, along with boxers from Berbice and Essequibo pitting their skills against each other, while those from Georgetown suffered cold feet and did not show.
Patrons who turned out had more than their fill and most of the bouts were entertaining with two of the three Peru medalists losing their bruising encounters.
The fight between the talented Michael April (GCBG) and the promising Shaka Moore of Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG), fighting in the 110-114 lbs division was a classic, going down to the wire with Moore gaining the nod in the end. Joel Williamson lost a controversial decision to Delon Charles in their catchweight encounter in a decision that did not go down well with some sections of the crowd. Welterweight Travis Fraser (RCBR) won his fight against Glenroy Smith in another good encounter which could have gone either way.
Nothing should be taken away from the 15-year-old Moore who won the best boxer of the night for his performance, which was by far the best performance from any of the visiting boxers Saturday evening.
In other decisions; Colin Hinds of RCBG got the better of Devon Wright of EBG in another bruising encounter in their 132 lb lightweight fight, Jamal Eastman of RCBG continued his impressive run with a decisive performance against Odemi Moore of EBG in their 100-104 lb. fight.
Albert Thomas Jr. of RCBG out boxed Christopher Moore of EBG in their 105-108 lbs
encounter, while Tasham Jack won his fight with Devon Armstrong in an all EBG affair in the 95-99lbs category, while in another all EBG affair, Delroy Elcock took care of business when he met Shaka Wright in an 80-84 lbs contest.
During the night, international female referee Romaine Agard was recognised as the most experienced local referee in Guyana. Local pugilist Derick Richmond, who broke middleweight champion Edmond DeClou jaw in round two of their scheduled eight-round middleweight contest and will be fighting on Boxing Night for the National Middle weight Title, was also recognised.
The event was declared open by Mayor of New Amsterdam Claude Henry. Mr. Henry, who was at ringside, expressed disappointment at the poor turnout. He said citizens of the town need to support their own and be more sports conscious. This he said could go a far way in their personal development. Mayor Henry was also appreciative of the fact that someone took the initiative to showcase some of the town’s sports men.
Organiser, former national and amateur multi weight champion, Jeff Roberts, thanked the patrons for supporting the activity. He also expressed thanks to main
sponsors Hand in Hand Insurance, Leader of the Opposition and Partnership for National Unity (APNU) David Granger, Courts Guyana Limited, Berbice Bridge Company and Giftland Office Max. (Samuel Whyte)
