The Republic Bank Nets came up trumps Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when they defeated Pepsi Sonics 55-43 to register their first win in the Division I contest of the Phillip George II Legacy (PG II) Competition.
Sonics had a poor shooting night, shooting less than 40 percent from the field as Nets used their size and speed to great advantage. Nets passed the ball well, getting everyone involved as they depended heavily on their transition game.
Hodayah Stewart ran hot from mid-range, hitting most of his 14 points with jumpers as he helped initiate a number of fast-break opportunities with outlet passes. Drumson McCulley scored 12 as Mortimer Williams and Fabian Johnson added 11 and 10 points respectively in the win.
Sonics’ only player in double figures was guard, Jason Squires who finished with 11 points but shot a horrible percentage from three-point range.
Meanwhile, in the earlier Division I encounter, Colts again had a massive third quarter rally to beat Plaisance Guardians 91-83. Shelroy Thomas backed up his opening 27 points with another sharp offensive display, scoring 24 points to lead Colts.
Sheldon Thomas also had 18 points while Celbert Thornhill, Dave Causway and Nikkoloi Smith scored 12, 11 and 10 points respectively for Colts.
Ron Campbell had a game high 28 points in the loss while Trenton Woolford and Enoch Matthews added 22 and 21 points.
In the Division III matchups, Republic Bank Nets fell to Colts 53-60 with Kester Myers leading the way for Nets while Evan Johnson had a team high 15 points for the Colts. Lennon Thornhill also had 13 points in the win for the Colts.
The Eagles walked away with a 57-47 win over the University of Guyana Trojans with Rolston Richmond and Kevin Higgins scoring 13 points apiece to lead the Eagles.
There were three walkover games as Plaisance got a w/o on the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the third division category, while Ravens got a w/o Patriots in the first division while Pacesetters gained a w/o from Panthers in the first division category as well.
The second edition of the Phillip George Legacy tournament will continue this weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
