A would be bandit had his freedom cut short when he attempted to seek treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for a gunshot injury he sustained during an exchange of gunfire with a plainclothes policeman on Saturday night.
The man, identified as Jamal Cromwell, 20 years, of Tucville, Georgetown went to the hospital two hours after the confrontation with the cop, probably thinking that no one would suspect that he was a bandit.
However, his explanation of how he received the wound did not add up and police officials stationed at GPHC outpost immediately became suspicious.
They reported the matter to their central operations who had already been on the alert for any report of a wounded criminal suspect.
Earlier at about 18:30 hours on Saturday, the plain clothes police rank observed the man walking behind a couple in the vicinity of Anira and Irving Streets, Queenstown.
The policeman, suspecting that a robbery was about to take place, intervened and challenged the suspicious character, who pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the policeman.
According to a press release from Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, the policeman returned fire but the suspect managed to escape on a motor cycle ridden by a waiting accomplice.
Later, at about 20:30 hours, the suspect went to the GPHC for treatment to a gunshot injury to a finger on his left hand.
The police were informed and he is under guard at the hospital.
