Opening ceremony on today, Wisburg play Christianburg Wismar in first match
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) has concluded arrangements of sponsorship for its inaugural ‘Sunburst’ Linden Secondary Schools Under-17 basketball championships, which bounces off today at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court starting at 3:00pm.
Secretary of the LABA Joseph Chapman in a release disclosed that through the Continental Group of Companies, the required sponsorship for trophies, replicas and medals were received for the tournament, which will see six secondary schools in: Linden, Mackenzie High, Wisburg Secondary, Christianburg Wismar Secondary, New Silvercity Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary and Harmony Secondary Schools contest the ten day championship at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard Court in Linden.
A representative team from the association led by its president Haslyn Graham, Secretary Joseph Chapman and Organisation Secretary Ashton Angel (Jr.) visited the offices of the Continental Group of Companies where it met Corporate Secretary Percival Boyce (Jr.) to discuss plans of the event and the sponsorship package.
President Haslyn Graham said, the aim was to have basketball played at all levels through the association and this follows the staging of the Under-19 Schools championship earlier in the year.
Boyce noted that the association had previously applied for sponsorship in 2011 but they were not successful. However, this time the company, through its Sunburst Orange Juice Brand acceded to the request to be involved with the association in bringing off this tournament.
Today’s opening will see a march past at 3:00pm of the six participating schools, which will be followed by the lone fixture of the day at 4:00pm where Christianburg Wismar Secondary are down to play Wisburg in the opening game.
Tomorrow, a double header is planned for the tournament venue, the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court, which will involve the other four competing schools as play continues every day of the week up to Friday.
