Rifle Shooter Charles Dean and Bodybuilder, Michael Morris
The sports fraternity in Guyana has suffered the loss of two athletes in the span of two days, Rifle Shooter Charles Dean, who last represented Guyana at this year’s Caribbean Championships in Barbados and Bodybuilder Michael Morris.
The quiet and unassuming Dean was a consistent O-Class shooter and always took pride in aiming his rifle down the range for Guyana and on the local scene.
Secretary of the Guyana National Rifle Association, Ryan Sampson in an invited comment paid tribute to the late Dean who passed away on Monday evening after a brief period of illness.
“Dean was a committed rifleman ever since joining the association some six years ago. He represented Guyana with pride in Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados but shot on a regular basis for Bermuda at the Caribbean level to make up their eight man team.
He was a jovial individual whose presence on the ranges would be sorely missed. Were it not for his illness, he would have certainly be part of this year’s championship which concluded on Sunday last at the Timehri Rifle Ranges.”
Dean, who hailed from #5 Village on the West Coast of Berbice is expected to be buried next Saturday at #9 Village.
Sampson, on behalf of National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud, Small Bore Captain Dale Hing and the GNRA Executive extended sincere condolences to Dean’s wife, family and relatives.
Bodybuilder Michael Morris who was last on stage at the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) senior championships ‘Mission of Mega Proportions’ in September 2010, was allegedly murdered in Guyana’s interior on Monday last.
Morris, a keen competitor, placed second in the Lightweight category. A police press release had stated that Morris was involved in an altercation with some other miners at West Park Backdam, Cayuni, during which he was dealt a blow to his head with a piece of wood.
The injury suffered by Morris eventually resulted in his death.
Kaieteur Sports takes this opportunity to extend sincere condolences to the families of both Charles Dean and Michael Morris, May their souls rest in eternal peace. (Franklin Wilson)
