The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department is collaborating with the University of Guyana (UG) to enhance its officers’ public relations skills to ensure accurate information is disseminated to the public.
The four-day training programme, which started yesterday at Cara Lodge, is being facilitated by UG’s Centre for Communication Studies. It is supported by the Ministry of Health. The training targets Inspectors and Officers of the National Food Safety and Control Committee from the various Regions.
Professor Jacob Opadeyi, Vice Chancellor of UG, whilst delivering brief remarks at the opening session of the training, said Safety and Control Officers need to communicate efficiently with persons.
He said that they gather information from the field that is not available in textbooks, and as such, their work should be regarded as research and used to better communities.
Opadeyi said the effectiveness of officers is not determined by the number of tickets given but the changes made.
According to Carolyn Walcott, Director of UG’s Centre for Communication Studies, food is a top priority for survival, and information should be accessible, since it is a human right.
The four-day training forum would not transform officers into reporters but equip them to disseminate media releases and make television appearance.
The training focuses on report writing; information, preparation and presentation; and field work-audio visual production.
