Naomi King, Dylan Nurse, Onika George, Amy Grant and Britany Van Lange were just a few of the stars that turned in commendable displays and led District 11 (North Georgetown) to championship honours when the Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union National School Swimming Championships concluded at the Castellani Swimming Pool late yesterday afternoon.
Indeed, the supporters that were at the venue enjoyed a truly
competitive event and urged on their charges to exciting finishes. However, up to press time officials were still working to ascertain the final tally but with just two events to be completed, District Eleven had amassed a comfortable 179 points and were considered to be in an unassailable position.
Both male and female participants turned in commendable scores for the winners with the former group amassing 97 points while the latter chipped in with 82.
Upper Demerara/Kwakwani were positioned at second place with 115 points but officials could not guarantee them the second place slot since that district is merely 15 points adrift of Upper Demerara/Kwakwani.
Cayuni/Mazaruni, also in the hustings and at 100 points, might just be elevated closer to the top. All of this speculation will disappear following the official results which should be announced soon.
The other points standing up to press time are North West (77), Rupununi (58), East Georgetown (57), South Georgetown (36), East Bank Demerara (13), West Coast Berbice (13), West Demerara (8), Corentyne (5) and East Coast Demerara (2).
District Eleven enjoyed competent representation from several swimming stars but one could not help but single out Accalia Khan who simply destroyed her opponents in the second heat of the Girls Under-16 50m breast stroke event where her victory was so resounding that long after she had exited the pool, her adversaries, Lima Adrian (District 5) and Kimberley Ferrira (District 14) were still struggling to complete the distance.
Van Lange also dominated her category, the Girls open 50m breaststroke, leaving Sunita Lyte and Olisia Rodrigues in her wake. Another District 11 representative, Amy Grant turned in remarkable performances, winning the girls Under-14, 50m backstroke and girls Under-14 50m freestyle.
Kaieteur Sport will provide a more comprehensive report when officials are through with the tallying process.
Meanwhile, swimming activities return to the Castillani Pool tomorrow morning when the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) stages a short course swimming event which concludes on Sunday 24 next.
