There is no doubt that the heavily subscribed Group 2B will provide a lot of excitement for the fans and Guyana’s Shawn King, who resides in Canada speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently, said he is gearing to be part of the action when the starter’s signal lowers on Sunday during the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC), at the South Dakota Circuit.
King, who will be driving a Second Generation Mazda RX7 once campaigned in the Group 4 category, but explained to this newspaper that because he is usually self-sponsored, the high cost of modification and maintenance to upgrade the car has made it impossible for him to compete against cars that are far more superior in every aspect of racing.
According to King, the Team is currently effecting quite a few changes to the car including the fuel injection and carbuerator, all with the expectation of generating more speed to combat his rivals.
King when asked about his mental readiness responded by saying that he feels well mentally and it is just a case of getting the car in racing shape and doing some testing, before going out on the track and giving it his best shot.
The speedster is hoping to get a minimum of 5HP more which he believes will give him a significant boost to make him competitive in the Division.
Asked to make a comment on the highly touted Group 4 category, King felt that Guyana’s Kevin Jeffrey will be hard to beat, adding that the local champion has done quite a lot of modifications to his machine that has made him very competitive within the Group.
He, however, felt that Guyana’s Mark Vieira and Andrew King along with Jamaica’s Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore will have a say as well, but reckoned that Jeffrey over the past year has gained in confidence, while his driving skills have improved immensely and those two elements have swayed his choice for him.
He urged fans to come out in their thousands to offer critical support for the locals as they attempt to repel the challenges of their regional and North American counterparts in the battle for overall supremacy.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism which has been on board for the past three years will once again partner the GMR&SC in an event that has evolved into a major sport tourism attraction.
GT&T, Seaboard Marine, Valvoline, Banks Beer and King’s Jewellery World, Fly Jamaica are among the major sponsors for this event.
