West Coast Berbice, District 5, will be aiming for a top five overall finish in the track and field contest of the 53rd National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships, November 19-22 at the Castellani Pool and National Stadium.
The District, which is known for dominating in the younger age groups and in the distance races, will be executing a master plan to win athletics title. This is according to Sports Representative of the District, Joycelyn Sears.
“We have a strong chance of placing one to five in the track and field, but because we are not as strong in the swimming and the cycling and teachers I am not so sure about the overall champion of champions,” Sears said.
Sears said that preparations are close to complete as the athletes are being trained. She informed that Royston McDonald and Mario Roberts are the two coaches working with the athletes to get them into competition mode ahead of the nationwide championships.
“Our team from way back would normally dominate the distance and middle distance and the athletes are training right now, everything is covered and I would say that we are 80 percent prepared so I’m grateful for that,” Sears noted.
The nation’s largest schools’ competition gets underway on Tuesday with the swimming contest and continues the following day at the National Stadium with cycling and track and field contest. Teams must win or place highly in four competitions to win overall.
