Initial teething problems had forced the postponement of the inaugural Berbice Fight Night Boxing Card organised by former boxing champion, Jeff Roberts and Monty Bovell, initially scheduled for November 9 last. The organisers have since intensified efforts and as are now ready to stage the cards at a new date, November 30.
Activities will be staged under floodlights at the Matthew Allen Road (Stelling Road), and the organisers have assured a chockfull of action. So far, four gyms, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles, Rosehall Jammers and the Essequibo Boxing Gym have signaled their intent to participate and will join Roberts’ Champions Boxing Gym (RCBG) in the one night slugfest.
Both Roberts and Bovell are very upbeat and said that they are anxious to have the young pugilists from that region engaged in constant and productive activity. The coaches also hinted that the tournament will form a part of their yearly itinerary.
They said that they are examining the yearly programme of the parent association so that they may be in a better position to fix their dates.
In the meantime, they have been able to solicit sponsorship from the Hand in Hand Insurance Company, Courts (Guyana) Ltd and the Berbice River Bridge.
“Notwithstanding, we would be grateful if other corporate entities can render support so that this tournament could be a success and we could organise similar activities in the future,” said Mr. Roberts.
Those representatives of the RCBG are Travis Fraser (welterweight), Michael April (flyweight), Joel Williamson (bantamweight), Albert Thomas (Flyweight) and Jamal Eastman (100-105lbs).
