Thirteen-year-old, Gabrellia Motayne, underwent a successful brain surgery almost two months ago and is well on her way to leading a healthier life.
In mid-September, Montayne was diagnosed with Low-Grade Astrocytoma, a rare tumor of the brain, which can be fatal if untreated. Post surgery results of Low-Grade Astrocytoma may include deafness, facial weakness, or physical paralysis.
Low Grade Astrocytoma is an uncommon brain tumor made up of malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system which are fatal in a great majority of patients.
However, her mother, Sharmalitta Motayne, said that Gabrellia has shown tremendous improvement since the surgery.
“Gabrellia has shown tremendous strength and will power throughout this whole ordeal, enough for her pull through I want to thank God for the strength he has given her…
“Even, the doctors, who performed the operation were amazed at how quickly she was recovering, they said she was a miracle. I pray a lot during this time; it is something that I believe that no parent should go through when Gabrellia was in that operating room…
“After the surgery Gabrellia was expected to spend one week in the Intensive Care Unit, she only spent 36 hours.”
Although, she has not completely recovered, Gabrellia is doing fine. “We are making sure that she is not putting much pressure on the brain. She cannot go to school for now but she is relatively active.
“She still suffers from a little blurred vision and so, but doctors said that this will get better in time. She loves to play snake and ladder and so on with her younger brother.”
Before the operation, Gabrellia’s relatives made a public appeal for urgent financial help to pay for her surgery. Local doctors had referred Motayne for surgery and treatment at a Trinidad-based neurological centre which evidently cost almost $10 million.
Ms. Motayne expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf her immediate family to the people who generously gave their support during the period of Gabrellia’s surgery.
“We would like to thank God, our relatives, friends and the general public, for their prayers, mental and physical support especially those who responded to the call for urgent financial assistance which was needed to save Gabrellia’s life.
“We are forever grateful to the doctors and medical team of Consolidated Medical Management, to those who performed Gabrellia’s surgery successfully.”
Gabrellia, a form two student of South Ruimveldt Secondary School, also expressed thanks to all those who assisted in making her operation successful. She is scheduled for a follow up Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scan (MRI) next month.
She will return to Trinidad in January for post surgery examination.
