Crime Chief Seelall Persaud has announced that despite recent successes, work still has to be done to dismantle a major criminal outfit called the ‘Hot Skull Gang’.
The gang is based in Albouystown and within recent times several of its members have been either killed or placed behind bars.
Gang members are identified by the image of a human skull tattooed on their bodies.
And while the gang has been on the police radar for some time, focus on reining in its members intensified this year, according to the Crime Chief.
The gang members include the Allicock brothers, four of whom recently received separate 60-month jail terms for armed robbery.
Three other members of the gang, Jermaine Canterbury, called “Chow”; Mark Anthony Joseph, called “Two Grand”; and Romeiro Branco Gouveia, all of Albouystown, were also recently killed in a police sting operation outside the K&VC Hotel.
Several other members are before the court on several counts of armed robbery and possession of illegal firearms.
The Crime Chief said that while the police have not actually dismantled the gang, they have significantly disrupted its operations. “Our investigations are continuing,” the Crime Chief said.
But while members of the Hot Skull Gang are still out there, Crime Chief Persaud disclosed that the force has effectively shut down the operations of a West Demerara/Parika gang, with most of the members behind bars on murder and armed robbery charges.
The police have also closed down the operations of another criminal outfit whom they suspect was responsible for a series of robberies in the Corentyne, Berbice.
The Crime Chief said that most of the gang members are in their late teens or early twenties.
Statistics show that most of the crimes are being committed by two-man outfits.
“A lot of what we see in this country are men who know each other who are willing to take the risk involved in the commission of a crime…they have no interest in each other’s wellbeing,” the Crime Chief said.
According to Persaud, the Caribbean and Latin America is the most violent place in the world outside of the various war zones on the globe, and most of the crimes are committed by the young people.
