Raymond Britto, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, was yesterday granted bail to the tune of $400,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on November 7 on the Prospect Public Road, he drove motor car, PDD7385, in a dangerous manner, causing the death of Roy Harilall.
According to Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, at about 23:50 on November 6, Britto was proceeding north along the western side of the Prospect Public Road. The court heard that the deceased was a motorcyclist who was proceeding south along the same carriageway when the defendant slammed into him.
Prosecutor Mangru stated that due to the collision, the motorcyclist fell on the road and received severe injuries which resulted in his death.
The defendant was subsequently arrested and charged.
Britto, 26, who was unrepresented, told the court that he is a minibus driver who resides at Lot 1 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The Prosecution requested substantial bail for the defendant and further asked for his passport to be lodged. Prosecutor Mangru stated that there are currently no eye witnesses and applied for two weeks to complete the investigations.
The Prosecution’s requests were upheld and Britto is expected to appear at the Providence Magistrates’ Court on December 23 for report and fixtures.
