One man was shot dead on Friday afternoon at Barakara some 60 miles up the Canje River while his assistant is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital following an altercation with some residents in the area.
Dead is Titus Sutton, called “Franky” or “Preso”, 53, a re-migrant, who hails from Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara.
He was shot at the home of a man with whom he had a dispute.
His colleague, Sherwin Mc Almont, 34, called ‘Tight Shirt’, also of Melanie Damishana, was shot in the leg.
He was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted and spent Friday night, before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, after he complained that he was not getting proper treatment in Berbice. He allegedly told relatives that he was not getting any treatment from the time he was rushed to the hospital.
Information was sketchy but Kaieteur News understands that Sutton who lived overseas for a number of years, returned home a few years ago and decided to go into cash crop farming, choosing the Canje River for this purpose.
According to his relatives, Sutton, a father of four grown children who all live overseas, farmed at a place called the Lake at a Ekura, Canje River.
Information reaching this newspaper stated that a dispute broke out between the alleged shooter, a man called ‘Malik’ and some others.
The men journeyed to ‘Malik’s home at Barakara where the dispute intensified resulting in Sutton being shot in the face at close range, reportedly with a shotgun.
He fell on the steps of the small house where his body remained until it was removed by police and relatives who had journeyed with the cops all the way up the Canje River.
The body was brought out of the river and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.
A police report into the matter stated that investigations are being conducted into the murder of farmer Titus Sutton, which occurred at about 15:30 hours on Friday at Barakara, Canje River, Berbice.
The police said that their investigations have so far revealed that Titus Sutton was involved in an argument with another man who allegedly shot him to his chest with a shotgun.
“Sherwin McAlmont, 34, also of Melanie Damishana, was shot and injured to his right thigh by the suspect who escaped. Sherwin McAlmont has been admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital for medical treatment,” the statement said.
Police are on the hunt for the men who are known to authorities and are said to be armed and dangerous.
Titus Sutton was the brother of the late popular Melanie Damishana resident, Mark Sutton, who collapsed a few years ago while playing football on the community’s playfield.
Only a few months ago he lost his sister, Shelly, who collapsed suddenly at her home in Melanie.
