A long-standing city jewelry store was yesterday torn down just after noon yesterday following a court order. The resident had been given several months notice by the new owners who began construction last year.
When Kaieteur News arrived at what was once Boxer’s Jewelry on America and Longden Streets, showcases and other articles were removed and placed outside the place of business, while dozens of customers began pouring into the premises inquiring about the safety of their jewelry.
A source told Kaieteur News that the building which housed the jewelry store for over 15 years had been recently bought by the owners of Fazia’s Collection located in the Stabroek Market area.
The source added that the other occupants were given notice to remove from the premises before its rehabilitation but the jewelry store remained during construction.
Court marshals and police officers were present when a demolishing crew began its work.
This action attracted a host of spectators who shared mixed views about the incident.
None of the proprietors was available for a comment at the time of this publication’s visit.
