Asif Yakub, 31, of Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast who was accused of the 2008 rape of a 14-year-old Riverstown girl and robbery under arms committed against the said teenager was freed on Tuesday by Justice Sandra Kurtzious, in the Suddie High Court.
Justice Kurtzious afforded Yakub his freedom after his attorney Latchmie Dindyal made a no-case submission. The jury was instructed to return not guilty verdicts in both charges.
The court heard that between November 3, and November 4, 2008, at Adventure, Yakub, who was 26 at the time, allegedly followed the then 14-year-old after she had disembarked a Ferry at the now abandoned Adventure Ferry Stelling and was walking to her aunt’s home at Adventure.
While walking, she was confronted by Yukub.
The teen related later to the police that Yukub approached her from behind after following her and pulled her in some bushes where he raped her, then he proceeded to relieve her of a gold chain she was wearing.
Justice Sandra Kurtzious in pronouncing on the case cautioned Yakub to continue to go “forward and live a good family life.”
