Despite a game high 42 points from guard Akeem Kanhai, Natural Sciences coasted to a 74-69 win over Technology in the final of the University of Guyana Inter-Faculty Basketball Tournament which ended on Sunday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The win meant that Natural Sciences avenged the loss their suffered to the same team in last year’s final.
They were led to victory through solid performances from a host of players with Shelroy Thomas leading the way with 19 points, before fouling out, while Kevin Dey 15, Kadeem Jacobs and Dwight McKennon 14 each and Shaka Codrington 10, all combined to make significant contributions.
No other scorer reached double figures for Technology in their losing effort.
In the playoff for third place, Agriculture/Forestry defeated Staff 87-86 in an exciting encounter.
For the winners, Quincy Easton poured in 35 points, while Geoffrey La Rose with 21 and Ryan Dey 17, supported admirably.
Ewart Smith dumped in a game high 43 points for Staff, while Selvaughn Moseley added 25 for Staff.
In the playoff for fifth place, Social Sciences squeezed past Health Sciences 39-38 with Samuel Thompson netting 15 points for the winners. He was supported by John Fraser, who had 11.
Jonathan Pooran dumped in 17, while Akil Lewis assisted with 13 for Health Sciences.
Meanwhile, Sports Co-ordinator Lavern Fraser-Thomas speaking with this newspaper via telephone congratulated the females who participated in the tournament, adding that it is her fervent wish that their involvement could encourage more females to get engage in sports at the Campus.
