Rhythm Squad eked out a 4-3 victory on penalty kicks over Mahaica Determinators after their Premiere League encounter ended in a 1-1 stalemate during regulation time, while Grove Hi Tec inflicted a 4-2 whipping on Santos, also on penalty kicks when action in the Guyana Football Federation Premiere League football competition continued at the Georgetown Football Club Ground Sunday evening last.
The two teams were forced into the penalty decider after finishing regulation time on stalemates; Rhythm Squad’s goal came off the boot of Linden Pickett (42), while Delon Charles scored for Mahaica Determinators in the 56th minute. Jermaine Fraser netted a double in the 7th and 55th minutes for Santos but Domini Garnett ensured that the game went into penalty kicks with successes in the 36th and 76th minutes.
Indeed, both games were highly entertaining with all four teams demonstrating grit and determination. Fraser’s goal was a classic; he collected a pin point offering all the way from the halfway mark, collected on his left foot and completed the movement with a fluent volley that slid past the goalie. Thereafter, the game developed into a fierce battle until Kevin Alleyne was given marching orders in the 60th minute following a ferocious tackle and a second yellow card. Shortly afterwards, Grove Hi Tec equalized after a deceptive piece of work where one of Charles’ teammates acted as the shadow to a free kick that the former player eventually took for the ball to nestle aback the nets.
Several exciting moments including an averted goal after a goal mouth skirmish in front of the Santos’ berth which evaporated into a corner kick, which was eventually averted. It was indeed a great game and even though the final whistle sounded with the two teams stalemated at 1-1, the fans were thrilled by the encounter.
The drama was not yet over as Santos’ custodian saved the opposition’s first effort. Nevertheless Grove clawed back and eventually triumphed by a clear 2 goals.
