Ten years ago, officials of the Guyana Beverage Company (GBC) acquiesced to a request from the administrators of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club (FCFC) to offset the huge expenses needed to facilitate the development of their institution. Thereafter, the beverage company has sustained the deal and yesterday morning administrators of the club joined with some of the players and trooped to the Diamond ECD headquarters of the sponsors where they received an affirmative nod and the news that Guyana Beverage Company has extended the chivalry for another year to the tune of some $1.6M.
Managing Director of the donating firm, Mr Robert Selman, was joined by his PRO, Shamieza Yadram, President of the FCFC, Wayne Forde, Coach, Sampson Gilbert and Secretary (FCFC), Daniel Thomas. He once again expressed delight in supporting the club and reiterated the power of the sport in the developmental mix. Mr Selman said that the sport is in dire need of support and called on government officials and those of the business community to join forces to improve the fortunes of local ball weavers. The GBC boss strengthened his view of the power of sport to unite nations by highlighting the benefits that can be had; “I never really heard of Morocco until their participation in world football,” exhorted Mr Kellman. He also highlighted the benefits accrued by Trinidad and Tobago through the cricket exploits of world renowned cricketer, Brian Lara. “It can be done for Guyanese; the players need the support otherwise they will lose heart,” pronounced Mr Selman.
Mr Ford agreed with Mr Selman and echoed his views that local ball weavers would benefit immensely from the input of committed sponsors. “I laud the input of the Guyana Beverage Company but at the same time I feel it is regrettable that amidst the many local corporate entities, it took the will and generosity of a foreign company to support the developmental efforts of our club,” lamented Mr Forde. He then chided those that are somewhat complacent in the administration of their corporate duties, “It is an indictment against local businesses which criticize rather than seek ways and exploring avenues in fostering a working relationship with the clubs while supporting the developmental agenda,” concluded Mr Forde.
Ms Yadram urged the footballers to continue applying themselves to their tasks with an aim of winning. “Put Fruta first and you cannot go wrong,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, Mr Thomas indicated to Mr Selman that his executives are currently putting the modalities in place for the initiation of a branding campaign that involves several business entities that have supported the club. He explained the initiative to Mr Kellman who was impressed and directed his PRO to commence the process immediately. The astute businessman immediately identified a target area and the product that will adequately address the issue even as he committed to support. That project is due to be completed by late January/early February. (Michael Benjamin)
