The Bartica Community is expected to come alive mid next month when a collaborative effort between the Guyana Boxing Association and Red Earth Promoters S.D.L.M. produces fruit.
GBA and Red Earth have come together to take amateur boxing to Bartica and will stage the Champion of Champions competition at the Bartica Community Centre Ground on November 15 and 16.
At yesterday’s launching held at the Vashie’s Night Club GBA president Steve Ninvalle called the partnership the beginning of an epic journey that will conclude with the improvement of the sport. “It is a simple but significant step in the effort to enhance the sport. We see it as another fitting example of our Endeavour to decentralize the sport in Guyana,” Ninvalle said.
“It is partnerships such as this that is needed to take boxing off of life support and it is my wish that this evolves into an annual event.”
Ninvalle noted that over 20 of Guyana’s best amateur fighters will make the trip to Bartica to participate in the two-day event. “This event serves a twofold purpose. It is a shot in the arm for boxing while it does a mountain of good for the Bartica community,” Ninvalle added. According to Ninvalle, GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole is expected back from Kazakhstan shortly and will join with National coach Wincel Thomas to run the tournament.
Banks DIH, under it Banks Premium Brand is the main sponsor of the tournament. Branch Manager Leonid Tobin, while congratulating GBA and Red Earth Promoters, disclosed that his company was happy to be part of the event. “We are proud to play a part in making this event a reality and we are certain that it will serve the community well,” Tobin said.
Also present at the launching was NDC vice chairman Stephen Belle as well as members of Red Earth Promoters. Belle disclosed that amateur boxing is new to Bartica and interest is already high in the community. “The NDC is supportive of this event and I expect a very large crowd every night,” Belle said.
According to Shawn Wilson, chairman of Red Earth Promoters, the intention is to make the tournament an annual one with the hope that it will help Bartica produce a national, and possibly a world boxing champion.
