By Javone Vickerie
A fire suspected to be the work of an arsonist, ravaged a two-storey house located in Castello Housing Scheme, West La Penitence yesterday, leaving a family of six homeless.
According to neighbours, at around 15:00 hrs (3:00 pm), smoke was seen billowing from the middle section of the upper flat before the entire top flat became engulfed with intense flames.
“I been sittin’ down over the corner with some boys and all I see is the black smoke in the air so we run over and go fuh go in the house fuh see if we could save anything, but the house start ketch quick because the top is wood,” an eyewitness said.
The eyewitness said that although the fire service acted promptly and was able to save nearby houses, the flames had already ripped through the top flat.
“We didn’t get to save much from the top flat because dem flames de hot bad, but we get to take out some a dem things wuh been downstairs in another apartment,” a neighbour explained.
Pandemonium broke out when some of the occupants arrived at the scene only to be met with debris scattered all over the yard.
“Oh God man yuh serious buddy, who coulda do this buddy, all me ting dem gone man. Up to just now I lef’ hey and this place been, suh who coulda do this budday? One of occupants asked.
Leslyn Greene, a relative who resides next door to the destroyed house said that she believes that the house was “willfully” set on fire by a cousin who lived at the home.
“I been home and I smell smoke and when I look outside I see the house on fire, so I tell me daughter them see if de lil children dem deh in the house and they run and bring the children,” the woman said.
Greene added that the lot 50 Castello Housing Scheme, house was recently put up for sale by a Power of Attorney who resides in the United States.
She told Kaieteur News that no one was home at the time of the fire, although the two children were unattended in the yard.
Another occupant Cary Fanfair said that his elder brother was at home one hour before he (Cary) left the house to pick up some medication.
“When I go and pick up the medication and come back people saying that the fire start from me room. Me brother been up stairs in the house and a girl been downstairs watching over me two nephew dem,” Fanfair recounted.
He added that about one week ago, workers from the Guyana Power and Light disconnected power from the house and removed the meter and line. This, he said, was reason to rule out that the fire was caused electrically.
An investigation has been launched.
