A new Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Commissioner, Athmaram Mangar, was sworn in yesterday as former PPP/C Commissioner Jaya Devi Manickchand resigned. He was sworn-in at the Credentials Room, Office of the President.
Present at the ceremony were Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman, Chairman of GECOM Dr. Steve Surujbally, and other Commissioners.
President Donald Ramotar in congratulating Mangar on his appointment said that he would be filling an important vacancy. The President added that it is his hope that the work of the commission is foremost in Mangar’s mind and that he continuously improves the democratic institutions within the country.
Newly sworn in Commissioner, Athmaram Mangar, said that his expertise are in management and he expects those are the areas he will be facing regarding to elections operations.
“It is a policy post, so I expect there will be some policy making as well. I would want to deal with the technical matters in an environment with which I am comfortable in.”
As GECOM workload increases in preparation for Local Government elections due in the coming months, GECOM has already demarcated the 71 district boundaries and constituencies.
