The Guyana Defence Force yesterday confirmed that is conducting an investigation into the disappearance of some 7.62×39 rounds from the Guard Room of the Colonel John Clarke Military School at Tacama, Upper Berbice River.
However, the army statement said that ten rounds were missing, rather than 463 rounds, as Kaieteur News had reported last Sunday.
According to a brief army statement, the Guyana Defence Force has since conducted checks that accounted for all other ammunition held at the training school.
The statement did not reveal when the ammunition disappeared or whether any ranks or civilians had been detained in connection with the investigation. The 7.62×39 ammunition is used in the AK-47 assault rifles.
Additionally, the army disclosed that it has set up a separate Board of Inquiry to report on any breaches of the Standing Operating Procedures for the handling and accounting for ammunition at that training location.
Kaieteur News had reported on Sunday that the GDF was searching for 463 rounds of 7.62X39 ammunition that went missing from the military training camp at Tacama in the Berbice River. Kaieteur News was told that the army discovered the theft last Thursday.
This newspaper was told that ranks from the Military Investigation Department were flown in to the area to conduct further investigations. Their first mission is to ascertain how long the ammunition has been missing. It is believed that the rounds have not left the base, because as soon as they were found to be missing no one was allowed to leave.
At present Tacama is the location where the Junior Leadership Course and the Skills at Arms Course are conducted. Each of these involves the firing of live rounds.
The procedure is for the rounds to be uplifted from the armoury either at Timehri or at Camp Ayanganna and transported to Tacama. A Sergeant Major would then sign and proceed to store the ammunition.
When live rounds are to be used there is a Fire Point Officer who collects these rounds and who must account for them at the end of the exercise. Any unused rounds must be turned over to the Sergeant Major.
