Dear Editor,
I would like to bring to the attention of the public and government officials issues related to the state of public transportation in Guyana. Persons are being treated like animals at the bus park just to secure transportation to their destination. Especially at the Route 44 Annandale bus park.
I am not surprised that commuters accept this treatment because the government does not leave us with any other option.
I would like to reflect on one night at the Annandale bus park when a bus conductor stood over the bus door blocking persons from entering the bus. He was literally choosing who would enter the bus, and further, whether these persons would pay $200 instead of the standard $100 fare.
I clearly remember a senior male begging to get in but being refused as he could only afford $140. It was natural that persons got angry over this situation and began expressing themselves in a vociferous manner. The driver and the conductor had the audacity to curse those innocent people from whom they earn their daily bread. To my knowledge bus drivers and conductors should be offering a public service. Why then do they treat customers like dogs? Why do we have to beg to travel in their buses to get home? Why are we being constantly overcharged? More so, what is the government doing about this situation?
This is only one experience of many. I am sure many persons out there have shared similar experiences and even worse. If I am to share all my experiences concerning Guyana’s poor public transportation system, I would have to write a book.
My suggestion therefore to the government is to inject state-owned 32-seater buses into the public transportation system and have them operate simultaneously with privately-owned minibuses. In Barbados no person is left at a bus stop. Let no one be left on our roads for hours, let no one be overcharged and let us all be treated with the respect we deserve.
T. Das
