…as shooter’s accomplice tries to remove injured man
New Amsterdam Hospital was in a state of confusion Wednesday evening when associates of the man who shot and wounded a mentally ill Dunstan Simpson, 35, of No 53 village Corentyne on Tuesday evening, attempted to remove the injured man from the hospital.
According to reports, the visitors came with the promise to take Simpson to Balwant Singh Hospital in Georgetown. However, quick intervention of nurses at the institution thwarted the attempt.
Sometime Wednesday, men associated with the alleged shooter, and who are bodyguards of a prominent individual, visited the New Amsterdam hospital and attempted to take him away.
The men had earlier promised Simpson’s relatives that they want to make sure that the injured Simpson is well taken care.
It was not known if a police guard was at the hospital at the time. However, Simpson and one of the men were already on their way out of the medical institution to board a vehicle when the nurses realized what was happening and decided to go after the men.
Simpson was eventually collected by the nurses and returned to the ward.
Police presence has since been beefed up at the hospital.
Simpson was shot and wounded on Tuesday evening in front of a popular hangout on Main Street, New Amsterdam by a licenced firearm holder. Simpson was shot twice, once to his chest and once to his left hand. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he remains warded.
The suspect who fled in a car subsequently reported to the station and told investigators that he was robbed by the man who was shot. However, he was arrested and placed in custody as there were many discrepancies in his story.
