Over 5,000 pensioners have started receiving an annual $20,000 electricity subsidy.
According to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), it has started to disburse the Parliamentary-approved annual electricity subsidy and the accounts of 5,610 registered pensioners have been credited.
The electricity accounts for pensioners who completed the verification exercise after August 13th will be credited subsequently, the utility company said.
The $20,000 subsidy was announced earlier this year by Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh as part of a menu of measures in the 2013 budget to assist the vulnerable in society.
Currently, in excess of 42,000 old age pensioners receive $12,500 monthly. There is also in excess of $200M being spent annually to help pensioners pay water charges.
In announcing the $20,000 subsidy earlier this year in his Budget presentation, Dr Singh said that the assistance will reduce the electricity charges that will have to be met by each pensioner. It will in effect increase the disposable income of senior citizens by a further $590M per annum.
GPL says it has made available for queries its Commercial Call Centre which can be reached on 592-226-2606 between 08:00hrs to 16:30hrs Mondays – Thursdays and 08:00hrs to 15:30hrs on Fridays.
