Three divisions, A, B and ‘B’ will be contested and a highly competitive day on the boards is anticipated when the Guyana Draughts Association stages its International 100 squares Annual National Draughts Championship, Saturday October 19 next at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
When activities get underway on the first day, players will compete in the ‘B’ division competition and a new champion will emerge following the elevation of defending champion, Jiaram, to the ‘A’ level. Veteran players Mark Braithwaite, Haroon Bacchus and Tyrone David are the favourites to win this division, while the five top players will qualify to the ‘A’ Division.
The following day, Sunday 20, competition in the ‘A’ Division gets underway. Defending champion, Jiaram, will compete with strong rivals the likes of veteran player, Carlton Simon, Wilfred Robinson and Khemraj Pooranmall, while all eyes would be on Linden player, Floyd Cumberbatch, who has been outstanding in his last three outings.
The curtains will be drawn one week later, on Sunday October 27 when defending champion, Carlton Simon, will be going all out to redeem his crown after losing to Jiaram on points at the last Independence tournament.
Khemraj Pooranmall, Floyd Cumberbatch and Mark Braithwaite are also hovering on the side and are just as eager to win the massive P&P sponsored first prize trophy on offer. There will also be cell phones, wrist watches and other prizes on offer. Registration gets underway at 09:30hrs and the tournament starts at 10:00hrs daily. Registration fee is $300.
