A 24-year-old sales clerk who resides at 7 Supply, East Bank Demerara yesterday appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore charged with embezzlement by clerk or servant.
It is alleged that during the period October 23, 2012 to June 17, 2013, at Vreed-en-Hoop, Raphael Laurie stole $1.4 million from Mohamed “Bobby” Bacchus, proprietor of Bacchus Drug Store.
To the allegation, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue stated that Laurie was authorized to collect orders, deliver items and receive payments on behalf of the Charlestown drug store. Bacchus later discovered irregularities in some fifty transactions that amounted to a total of $32 million.
The Prosecutor told the court that the proprietor reported his findings to the police which led to the arrest of the defendant.
Investigations later revealed that 26 of the said transactions which were conducted between the said entity and Vreed-en-Hoop’s Universal Pharmacy and Variety Store, amounted to $1.4 million.
Rambajue told the court that when arrested Laurie admitted to the fraud.
The Prosecutor objected to bail on account of the pending matters which the defendant has before the court.
The court heard that the defendant also faces one count of simple larceny and two counts of embezzlement at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s court.
Rambajue said that there are also outstanding allegations under investigation.
Laurie was remanded to prison until Monday.
