On a day blessed with brilliant sunshine Bangladesh leveled the seven-match under-19 ODI series with a 63-run win in the second ODI at Bourda yesterday after exploiting conditions which more suited them than the home team.
Wicketkeeper Uddin Jashim and Mossadek Saikat fashioned classy half-centuries to spearhead the tourists to 259-7 when their 50 overs expired on a track offering prodigious turn for the spinners.
Left-arm spinner Javed Rahut then snatched 5-55 from 10 after the off-spin trio of 15-year-old Skipper Mehedi Miraj, Sadman Anik and Saikat had shackled the batsmen with some virtually unplayable deliveries as the home team collapsed to 196-9 despite a 70-run second wicket partnership from Skipper Jeremy Solozano and Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
The left-handed Saikat, who made 75 against Guyana under-19s at Bourda top-scored with a well crafted 70, while Jashim, with two first-class matches to his name, stroked a classy 63 as they put together 91 for the third wicket on the lush green and fast outfield.
Saikat and left-hander Nazmul Shanto, who also batted well before he was bowled by left-arm Barbadian pacer Jerome Jones for 42, added 62 for the fourth wicket as Bangladesh registered their only 250-plus total against West Indies in eight matches at this level.
Opener Anik, who contributed 20 at the top of the order, supported Jashim after Emon Joyraj (1) edged a catch to Wicketkeeper Tristan Coleman off Jones with just 15 runs on the board.
When Anik drove the first ball from Guyanese left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai to cover, the visitors were 62-2 but Jashim and Saikat joined forces to orchestrate ‘operation rebuild’ before Shanto weighed in with some big hitting towards the end.
Jones (2-66), Jofa Archer (2-49) and off-spinner Bryan Charles (2-40) were the main wicket takers while Motie-Kanhai was the most economical bowler with 1-31 from 10 overs.
When West Indies, who trashed the visiting team by six wickets at Providence on Monday, began their reply, they lost first match top-scorer Leroy Lugg for one to a catch to the Keeper off seamer Abu Saeed with two runs on the board in the second over.
The left-handed pair of Chanderpaul and Solozano added 70 for the second wicket but found themselves in all sorts of problems against the off-spinners who spun the ball past their edges almost at will on the spin-friendly track.
Solozano, the only batsman in the last regional 50-over under-19 tournament to score a ton, pounced on every bad ball with some delightful shots; but there were very few bad balls as the spinners turned them ‘square’ and his 44 lasted 25 overs before Miraj, who did an excellent job as leader, held a tame caught and bowled offering at 72-2.
Chanderpaul, with his father, prolific Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul watching, got off the mark with a glorious shot for four through cover off the second ball he faced off the lively Abu Rony, but his innings stalled once the spinners were introduced and he laboured for 30 overs for 24 before he attempted to pull a ball that kept low and was bowled by Rahut at 84-3.
Shemron Hetmyer hit two massive sixes in a cameo 20 but lost his head and his wicket playing an impetuous swipe ‘miles’ into the air and was caught at short mid-wicket after playing the identical shot off the previous ball when he was dropped.
Hetmyer’s demise at 116-4 was followed by another injudicious shot, this time by Coleman (21) who charged down the pitch and was stumped by Man-of-the-Match Jashim off Rahut two runs later.
Fabian Allen (3) was then stupendously taken at long-off by a diving Shanto off leg-spinner Likhon Zubair as the home team wobbled to 124-6 in the own backyard.
Pacers Archer (35) and Jones (17) added a face-saving 55 runs for the seventh wicket before Jones skied a catch to point off Rahut who also accounted for Archer at 183-9.
The third ODI is a Day/Night encounter from 13:30hrs tomorrow at Providence and all of the matches are being streamed live on the windiescricket website.
