– accused further remanded
Kenrick Duncan, one of the accused implicated in the $41 million heist from a Chinese department store, has been further remanded to prison after the matter was called up at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Duncan, of Stevedore Housing Scheme, North Ruimveldt, was previously remanded to prison on September 25.
On Tuesday, Duncan’s Attorney, Satyesh Kissoon, made an application for bail after he pleaded not guilty to robbery under arms before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Kissoon told the court that his client, a vendor and father of four, was arrested with 15 other vendors but never placed on an identification parade. He claimed that his client is the sole breadwinner of his family and has no previous antecedents with the law.
However, Prosecutor Corporal Bharrat Mangru objected to bail on the grounds that investigations into the matter are continuing.
On September 10, 2013 at Charlotte and Wellington Streets, in the company of others and while armed with a gun, 24-year-old Kenrick Duncan robbed Hu Yu Nan of US$71,000; $500 Suriname; $2.2 million in local currency, a quantity of Brazilian currency, 61 cell phones, a quantity of gold, silver and diamond jewellery, a quantity of artificial jewellery, a number of bags, six portable DVD players, and one 7.65mm Taurus pistol with eight matching rounds.
Faizal Mohamed, 33, a mechanic also known as “One or One-Foot” of Lot 1, East Ruimveldt, was also remanded to prison on October 3, 2013 in relation to the crime.
His matter will return to Court on October 12.
Duncan’s matter is adjourned until October 16.
