Andrew Barker, 37, a father of three of Betsy Ground, Canje and who is said to be of unsound mind, was on Friday sentenced to four months in jail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus when he appeared before her at the Reliance Magistrate’s court on two charges of threatening behavior.
He threatened Sookraj (only name) of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice on September 18, last.
According to Prosecutor Phillip Sheriff, about 10:25hrs on Wednesday September 18, 2013, the police responded to a report that Andrew Barker was threatening persons with a cutlass at Goed Bananen Land, East Canje.
On seeing the police ranks approaching, Andrew Barker attacked the ranks in a menacing manner and was shot to his left hand.
Barker is well-known in the district and lives by himself in a shack in a yard.
According to reports, Barker would walk around the district and cut branches to make coconut brooms which he would sell in the district.
According to the prosecution, Barker went into a yard and cut some branches to the annoyance of the owners. Barker and the man got into an argument and Barker subsequently left with the branches, after telling the occupants that the yard belongs to him.
The resident subsequently left and reported the incident to the Reliance Police Station. Ranks from the station visited Barker in his shack where he was busy making brooms.
In the process of trying to arrest Barker, the man took a stick which he always carried and lashed one of ranks.
Back up was sent for and as Barker continued to resist and threatened the cops he was shot in his left hand.
The police removed a knife, two sticks and the brooms.
He was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he remained warded for a period of time. He was subsequently released and charged.
In court he pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to two months on each count. The sentences will run consecutively.
