With the absence of organised football in Berbice and the seemingly return to dormancy of the Berbice Football Association (BFA), the ever reliant Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club has once again stepped into the fray to organise activities for the football starved Berbicians.
The Club has organised an Inter Ward competition for areas in East Berbice.
The tournament which is ongoing features eight teams, divided into two groups. The top two from each group will move on to the semifinals.
The one hour matches are being played on Friday and Saturday evenings with double headers on both nights beginning at 19:00hrs at the Scot’s Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam.
Group ‘A’ teams are North New Amsterdam, South New Amsterdam, Fyrish/Lower Corentyne and Manchester/Central Corentyne while group B comprise Central New Amsterdam, Rose Hall Town, East Canje and Joint Services.
The competition continued on Friday evening last with East Canje staring the show routing Rose Hall town 3-0, Sham Mohabir opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Shazam Parris then sealed the deal for the lads from East Canje with a double in the 24th and 26th minutes.
In the first game North New Amsterdam through a Delroy Ferdinand 47th minute effort and Manchester/Central Corentyne via a Kevon Grenville 57th minute response played to a 1-1 draw.
The competition was expected to continue last evening with another double header at the same venue. Fyrish took on South New Amsterdam and Central New Amsterdam were down to face Joint Services.
Incentives are at stake for the first to fourth placed teams and outstanding individual players.
The coordinator is Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey. (Samuel Whyte)
