After the completion of three rounds, junior chess players, Haifeng Su and Omar Britton Grant have amassed 3 points each and are the joint-leaders when action in the Diamond Mineral Water 2013 Junior Chess Championship Qualifiers Tournament continued at theGuyana Legion Hall, Carifesta Avenue, Sunday September 29 last.
Haifeng Su defeated Shariffa Ali, Rashad Hussain and Davion Mars while Grant got the better of Trenton Bennett, Roberto Neto and Andre Jagnandan.
The front runners would be keen to extend their lead and capture top honours when the final 4 rounds are contested at the Carifesta Sports Complex tomorrow morning. However, this is a very remote possibility as the two are expected to match wits in the first game tomorrow morning.
At the end of the tournament, seven players will be selected to compete in the 2013 National Junior Championship scheduled for later this month. Anthony Drayton is the defending champion and he said that he practicing diligently and is confident of retaining the accolade.
The tournament is still intricately poised and while Haifeng Su and Britton are the firm favourites to seal off premiere spots, any of the other players can still pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and claim the honours.
After the conclusion of the third round, and with the final four rounds to be contested, the other point standings read: Sheriffa Ali (2), Saeed Ali, Joshua Pedro, Davion Mars, Roberto Neto and Trenton Bennett (1 ½ each) Rashad Hussain and Alexander Brassington (1). Two other players have not yet scored a point.
