– Rohee
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday congratulated the University of Guyana (UG) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its establishment.
The party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee, disclosed that Cabinet had been discussing the issues facing the university. He did not, however, state if or what the PPP has in store for the entity on this occasion that would aid in alleviating some of its burden.
Rohee acknowledged that the anniversary marks a historic milestone in the life of the university which was established in October 1963. He said that the University and the government have roles that go hand in hand in relation to the development of Guyana. According to him, continuous efforts are being made to ensure that the courses at the university correspond with the country’s developmental thrust.
That statement was backed up by PPP member Indranie Chandarpal, who is a former Member of UG Board Council. She said that since her time, such development was a priority.
Rohee also stated yesterday that the PPP is proud of the fact that UG was established by the PPP government and was the brainchild of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
As he highlighted the progress made, Rohee said that “the University of Guyana started out on the modest location of Queen’s College compound with a limited number of students, but grew both in terms of student population and the range of disciplines offered as the years progressed. Today the Campus sits on the sprawling lawns of the Turkeyen Campus and has now expanded its offerings to the county of Berbice, again under the current PPP/C administration”.
“Undoubtedly the University has made, over the years, and continues to make, a significant contribution to the human resource development of the country by providing a wide range of skills, including technical and managerial. More recently, the University has also trained medical doctors and lawyers, an indication of the extent to which the University has advanced over the years.”
The Party wished the university success “in the realization of its mandate as the premier learning and research institution in Guyana.”
