– Guyana to host confab
Guyana will be hosting the 16th Biennial Conference of Presiding Officers and Clerks of the Caribbean, the Americas and the Atlantic Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Under the theme “The role of Parliaments as they meet the challenges in evolving Democracies”, the conference will be held from October 27 to 31 at the International Conference Centre.
According to Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, the conference will bring together delegates, observers and special invitees from over 14 Caribbean territories, Canada and the United Kingdom, to discuss topical issues. During the plenary sessions, delegates will deliberate on several topics including Parliamentary Procedures; Inter-parliamentary initiatives for Regional co-operation; and the role of the Speaker in changing parliaments.
Trotman said among the proposed activities for the conference is a dinner to be jointly hosted by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and a dinner hosted by the Head of State, President Donald Ramotar.
The theme of the conference can be deemed relevant to Guyana’s present political situation where for the first time in the National Assembly, the Opposition has a majority.
This reality has seen a tug-of-war setting in the House with political development in Guyana seemingly at a standstill. Opposition Bills approved in the National Assembly have not yet been assented to by the President, while the Opposition has not been accommodating in the passage of pertinent Bills presented by Government.
