The police and the Auditor General’s Office have launched an investigation into the theft of approximately $3M from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), a source from the health institution confirmed yesterday.
The discovery of the fraud was made sometime last week during an audit exercise and a female accounts clerk was taken into police custody but was released the following day.
She is currently off the job to facilitate investigations. Kaieteur News was informed that the clerk was responsible for the daily cash flow to the Finance Department as well as all the Petty Cash.
A police source close to the investigation informed this publication that the clerk told investigators that she has no knowledge as to how the money disappeared, but promised to cooperate.
In a statement, the GPHC said that an investigation has been launched into the alleged act of fraud committed on the institution.
