The returning Bankers Trust Falcons stunned the Kashif and Shanghai Kings 47-42, while Amelia’s Ward Jets avoided an upset by coasting past Block 22 Flames as the Trophy Stall, Linden Amateur Basketball Association run Regulation Open Basketball Championship continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court on Saturday.
The Kings were cruising 38-33 in the final quarter but were held to four points, the Falcons pulled off another upset of the top ranked Kings, this time outscoring their opponents 14-4 to emerge as a threat to reach the final four after both teams were tied at 23 at half time.
Once again the Falcons were led by the power forward Lawrence ‘Bolo’ DaCosta who produced 17 points and guard Leonard Caleb who continues to be an offensive threat in this tournament as he supported with 12 points. The Kings, even with the return of their inspirational leader Abdulla Hamid, failed to click in the end game and were unable to avoid going down to the eight ranked Falcons.
Young forward Akeel Primo was their best player with 14 team high points as Orin Rose and Omally Sampson each got eight points.
And the other top club Amelia’s Ward Jets blew out the Flames from Block 22 winning 67-48 after having leads throughout the periods at 17-14, 41-16, 46-32 and finally 67-41.
National player Shane Webster was their leading scorer with 11 points as Dennis Niles got nine with Javon Nelson and Joel; Webster adding six apiece.
The top scorer in the game was Block 22 Flames’ Kerwin Williams with 14 as Aubrey Johnson got 10 and Shavin Cameron eight.
The competition continues tomorrow with two more matches at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
