The border community of Rupununi in Region Nine took advantage of the closing of Amerindian Heritage Month 2013 to host its own celebrations in honour of the country’s Indigenous Peoples.
With the chain of heritage-themed events commencing on Thursday last, hundreds of residents from the five sub-districts in Region Nine ventured down to the St. Ignatius Benab where the three-day affair was held.
Among the activities that marked the heritage celebrations there were dramatic pieces, sports such as archery and the popular cassava bread making competition which was evaluated from the time the cassava is grated to the time it is baked.
Jessie Smith of Ruperty, North Rupununi, copped the first prize of $25,000 for making the most palatable cassava bread in the stipulated time.
Following the more action-filled activities during the three days, the Rupununi District concluded its Heritage celebrations on Saturday evening in a more chic setting with the crowning of the Region Nine Amerindian Heritage Month Queen.
