On a day characterized by determined efforts and close finishes, Nobbs House amassed 466 points to capture the spoils when the Queens College Secondary School staged its annual Inter-house Athletic Championships at their Eve Leary venue yesterday afternoon. Woolley House scored 461 points to finish in second place, while Austin House closed off the podium spots after scoring 454 points. Raleigh House finished in the 4th place slot with 434 points.
The championships ended late into the afternoon and the administrators were unable to peruse the respective performances of the athletes in order to determine which would have been voted the best among the lot in the male and female categories.
However, outstanding performances by male athlete Arianze Chance and his female counterpart, Yanessa Fredericks, might just tip the scales in their favour. Kaieteur Sport will be furnished with those details for a later publication.
Meanwhile, the event was graced by several personalities, all former students of the school including Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Conrad Plummer and former West Indies all rounder, Roger Harper. The latter individual was vested with the responsibility of declaring the event open and urged the students to compete within the confines of discipline even as he wished them a fun filled day.
The school’s administration, led by headmistress, Jackie Benn, was very evident in the coordination exercises and the latter individual said that she was enthused by the fierce but friendly rivalry exhibited by the students. Ms Benn said that she was delighted that the event was incident free even as she expressed gratitude to her support staff for their contributions. Among those coming in for high praise were Deputy Headmistress, Nadia Hollingsworth, former Deputy Headmistress, Gem Rohlehr and the many other teachers whose input added up in the final success story.
Ms Benn also had kind words for those parents that went the extra mile to ensure that the event was a success as well as the executive of the Parent Teachers’ Association. Member of the Board of Directors, Frank DeAbreu is still recovering from injuries sustained from a serious accident earlier this year and was unable to attend the event but Ms Rohlehr graciously acknowledged his input towards the success of the event.
Up to press time, the administrators were still engaged in the arduous task of examining the respective performances before declaring the various individual awards. Those details will follow in a subsequent article.
